Gneiss period

Special exhibition by Uwe Jonas I

n the Exhibition "Gneiszeit", gneiss from the Rauris Valley is examined using analog and digital means. Uwe Jonas ' artistic exploration of this stone includes, on the one hand, a playful exploration of the combinatorial possibilities of stone fragments to form regular or amorphous spatial bodies and, on the other hand, an examination of the structure as material and substance. This leads the painter and sculptor to investigate stone surfaces, the phenomenon of transparency in stone, its constituents and its geological formation.
In its purest form, the analysis of gneiss leads into the realm of the subtle structure. In the thin section of the stone, which is examined with a polarizing microscope, undreamt-of worlds of weightless beauty can be discovered that are otherwise hidden from the eye. Axel Feuss, who wrote the introduction to the exhibition publication, summarizes: "Precise sculptural work contrasts with the roughness of the material, concrete geometric form with the movement of the spatial concept. This is not a contradiction in terms, but rather a multi-layered experience tested on nature and artistic skill."
