The Era That Has Passed
Mobility, Transportation, and Vigilance in the European Age of the Coach (1500–1900)

In his Lecture , Professor Daniel Jütte (New York University), currently a Mercator Fellow at SFB 1369 Cultures of Vigilance, Lecture his research for a book project on urban mobility and vigilance in the early modern period.
His research focuses in particular on the spread of carriages and other four-wheeled vehicles in European cities from the 16th century onward, as well as the far-reaching economic, social, cultural, and gender-related implications of this development.
These new forms of urban and social mobility were accompanied, not least, by new practices of urban vigilance, which, however, remained in tension throughout the entire period with the manifold conflicts that had arisen as a result of the transformation of urban transportation and everyday life.
