acatech on Tuesday: Carbon Dioxide as a Raw Material—How Do We Close the Loop?

For decades, and to this day, crude oil and natural gas have served as major sources of energy and raw materials for the chemical industry worldwide, and they remain central to energy security and economic stability. Despite the growing supply of alternative energy in many areas, we cannot do without chemical energy sources. And we continue to need carbon sources for plastics and other products of the chemical industry.

How can we nevertheless diversify our raw material base in the long term and secure our technological leadership? The use of carbon dioxide and methane offers opportunities to efficiently recycle carbon while simultaneously tapping into new industrial value chains. How can this work in practice? Which research approaches are promising, and what is the current state of technological development? How can we accelerate the transfer from basic research to practical application? The integration of catalysis, AI-supported materials research, and scalable engineering are promising approaches in this area.

The German-born director of the U.S. Advanced Energy Technologies Directorate at Argonne National Laboratory outlines challenges and potential solutions that are critical to industrial competitiveness and technological sovereignty worldwide.
