Analytics at the Deutsches Museum
As part of the "Women, Technology, Knowledge – Women Leading Women" series, today we’re heading to the workshop of restoration research and conservation science. Speaker: Dr. Marisa Pamplona Bartsch

How Analytics Provides New Insights into the German Museum’s Exhibits To ensure that future generations can also hear the fascinating stories behind the original exhibits, these must be well preserved. To this end, the Department of Conservation Science uses laboratory instruments to investigate questions regarding materials, manufacturing techniques, and changes in the objects.
In collaboration with the ABK Stuttgart and the HTW Berlin, student projects on an A4/V2 rocket were carried out at the Deutsches Museum. First, the history and condition of the object were examined. In collaboration with TUM, infrared thermography was tested for condition analysis. Subsequently, cross-sections of the paint layers were analyzed using UV and visible light microscopy. This revealed that beneath the black-and-white paint visible today lies a green layer of paint dating from the Nazi era. To preserve the paint, students tested methods for cleaning, treating corrosion, and consolidating the paint in the laboratory and subsequently on the rocket.
