Wolfgang M. Heckl: The Culture of Repair

As soon as a smartphone screen cracks, people quickly buy a new one and throw the old one away. But we can break free from the throwaway culture—by learning to fix broken things ourselves again. Not only does this conserve the planet’s resources, it’s also a lot of fun! All across Europe, there are Repair Cafés where people work together to fix broken record players and toasters or create new, unique favorites from secondhand clothes.
In his Lecture , Wolfgang M. Heckl, former Director General of the Deutsches Museum in Munich, offers an engaging introduction Lecture culture of repair. He discusses aspects of sustainability, as well as the importance of fostering analytical thinking and attracting young talent to STEM fields—and shows us the path toward greater independence from industry.
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang M. Heckl is a physicist and served asDirector Generalof the Deutsches Museum in Munich from 2004 to May2025. He has received several awards for his engaging way of explaining complex scientific concepts, including the European Commission’s René Descartes Prize.
