Agents in the World: The Ethics of Embodied AI

What is ethically at stake when artificial agents act in the world? Hosted by the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML).

On the panel:

• Prof. Dr. Michael Klenk (Professor of Practical Philosophy, University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN); research in foundational and applied ethics — manipulation, autonomy, and the ethics of AI) on what it takes to protect human autonomy and guard against manipulation as AI agents begin to act on us and for us.
• Prof. Dr. Laura Crompton (Professor for the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI), AImotion Institute; research in human–AI interaction) on the questions of responsibility, agency, and transparency that arise as AI increasingly shapes human decisions and actions.
• Prof. Dr. Frauke Kreuter (Chair of Statistics and Data Science in the Social Sciences and Humanities, LMU Munich; Professor at the University of Maryland and co-director of the Social Data Science Center) on the data foundations of trustworthy AI, including data quality, protection, and infrastructure, and why what agents are built on decides whether they can be trusted in the world.

Moderated by Benjamin Lange, who leads the BMBF-funded Research Group in the Ethics of AI at LMU Munich’s Chair of AI Ethics and the MCML, and is a Research Fellow at the Oxford Uehiro Institute for Practical Ethics.
