acatech on Tuesday: Communicating Science and Technology

Constellation followed by reflection

“acatech on Tuesday” is celebrating a milestone anniversary: For ten years, this dialogue series organized by the German Academy of Science and Engineering has been bringing current and controversial technology topics into the public discourse.

We are using this very issue as an opportunity to start a conversation: What are the opportunities and challenges involved in discussing current and controversial topics? Who communicates what, where, how, and with whom?

The chosen format is unusual: acatech uses the constellation method, which was originally developed for family therapy but is now also successfully applied in companies and organizations. Instead of merely talking about a topic, the situation is represented in the room: participants volunteer to play the roles of various aspects of the system, making it possible to experience the dynamics within the system or unconscious conflicts firsthand. Complex topics—in this case, science communication—become comprehensible in an unconventional way, allowing participants to experience them holistically and through their senses.

Input:

  • Wolfgang C. Goede, science journalist and facilitator
  • Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Heckl, acatech member
  • Monika Landgraf, Director of Corporate Communications, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

Facilitator:

  • Dr. Ruth Sander, Politics in Space
