F. Zawrel – genetically and socially inferior
Puppet Theater by Nikolaus Habjan
The Kleine Theater Haar, in collaboration with the kbo-Isar-Amper-Klinikum and the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, presents the multi-award-winning puppet show “Zawrel – Genetically and Socially Inferior.” Author and puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan recounts the true life story of Friedrich Zawrel, who survived the Nazis’ “euthanasia” program for children in Vienna and, as an adult, encountered his former doctor and tormentor again.

The event is part of both institutions’ efforts to confront the past: examining the history of psychiatry and research under National Socialism, addressing institutional responsibility, and honoring the victims with dignity.
The focus is on the life story of Friedrich Zawrel: a childhood marked by poverty and life in children’s homes, persecution in the Nazi “children’s ward” at Am Spiegelgrund, and a long struggle for recognition, remembrance, and legal accountability. Habjan and Simon Meusburger distill this biography into a powerful theatrical performance that brings historical violence and its aftermath to life through the lens of an individual’s life story. The performance provides an artistically accessible yet deeply moving impetus and invites discussion.
