Neo-imperialism as a Contemporary Challenge
The international order is once again facing profound upheavals. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific, and the strategic realignment of U.S. foreign policy are challenging established certainties and shifting the global balance of power. Against this backdrop, the concept of imperialism is once again taking center stage in academic and political debate. Is it a historical relic, or does it rather describe a recurring pattern in modern history that continues in a modified form into the present day?
The opening lecture, “Imperialism: A Pattern in Modern History,” takes this question as its starting point and invites us to reflect on current dynamics in light of long-term historical structures. This raises fundamental questions: What forms of power, influence, and expansion shape the international order today, and what consequences does this have for Europe and its role in an increasingly fragmented world?
Experts will discuss these and other questions at the opening event of the ad hoc working group “Neo-imperialism as a Contemporary Challenge.” The BAdW’s new working group analyzes the neo-imperial strategies of Russia, China, and the United States against the backdrop of a shaken international order. It combines comparative, interdisciplinary research with various dialogue formats aimed at policymakers and the general public.
