Conflicts Over Memory in Public Spaces

Conflicts of Memory in Public Spaces: Reflections on How to Deal with the Nazi Past

The LMU main building has been located on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz for 80 years. The Exhibition “Renamed: Street Names and the Culture of Remembrance in Munich after 1945” examines how Munich expressed its political reorientation after the Nazi era by naming streets and squares after victims of the Nazi regime and members of the resistance. The exhibition focuses on debates about the culture of remembrance, tributes, and how to deal with the Nazi past.

Curated by LMU students Exhibition collaboration with the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History, the White Rose Foundation, and the Munich City Archives , this Exhibition invites visitors to interpret the city map as a reflection of historical and contemporary conflicts over memory.

To open the event, Professor Andreas Wirsching, former chair of Modern History and former director of the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich and Berlin, will deliver a Lecture in the Public Sphere: Reflections on Dealing with the Nazi Past.”

Registration is required by July 6.
