1826–2026: 200 Years Since LMU Left Landshut

In 1826, King Ludwig I ordered the relocation of the LMU from Landshut to Munich. The university had been founded in Ingolstadt in 1472 and moved to Landshut, along with its library, in 1800. As a result of the secularization of 1802–03, the library grew to over 100,000 volumes and became the third-largest university library in Germany.

To commemorate the departure from Landshut 200 years ago, the Moosburg Gradual will be on display at the Cistercian Abbey of Seligenthal during the Landshut Court Music Festival. Dated to around 1360, this parchment manuscript is one of the most significant late-medieval music manuscripts in Germany. It contains liturgical chants and a famous collection of Christmas carols. Today, it is part of the rare book collection at the University Library of LMU Munich.
