What is extremism?

Perspectives on the treatment of minorities in China
Lecture series FK13 "Times of Extremes"

"We are experiencing a turning point," said German Chancellor Scholz in the Bundestag after Russia's attack on Ukraine in February 2022. The supposed stability of the 20th century seems to have vanished, global challenges and crises are on the rise, social inequality is growing, and extreme views and behaviors are gaining ground. Societies and structures seem to be only partially equipped to deal with the polycrisis in a time of revolutionary technological, economic, social, and political change. Radicalism and extremism are endangering people and institutions. And yet many of the observable phenomena are not new, but they have rarely been so prominent.

The lecture series "Times of Extremes" deals with extremes of our time from different disciplines and invites participants not only to engage with these different perspectives, but also to reflect and discuss them. Expertise facilitates the evaluation of observed phenomena and helps to adequately counter extremist tendencies.

Prof. Dr. Peter Lecture will address the topic "What is extremism? Perspectives on dealing with minorities in China."
