Math on Saturday

The popular “Math on Saturday ” series continues with a Lecture accessible to all Lecture topic “What Does ‘Significant’ Mean Here? Statistics Between Confusion and Understanding.”

“The new vaccine is significantly more effective than the previous one.” You often come across statements like this in the news, but what does “significant” actually mean? Does “significant” mean the same thing as “important”? And does “non-significant” necessarily mean “it doesn’t really matter”?

Together, using concrete examples and simulations, we will explore what “statistical significance” really means—and, above all, what it does not mean. We will also discuss common misconceptions about significance, which even scientists themselves sometimes hold.

After the Lecture an opportunity to discuss the topic with the speaker.
