Guided tour the Stone Hall at Nymphenburg Palace, featuring frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann
At the height of his career, Johann Baptist Zimmermann (1680–1758) and his assistants created stucco and fresco work in the Stone Hall of Nymphenburg Palace on behalf of Elector Max III Joseph (1745–1777). This work was carried out shortly after the painting of the Wieskirche near Steingaden in 1755–1757. The painter depicted the theme of the country’s prosperity and flourishing in times of peace within a panoramic landscape scene. Designing the ceiling in such a way that it is pleasant and delightful for a moving viewer was an achievement of 18th-century painting: both the body and the eye are equally engaged. The fresco in Nymphenburg is a central work for a new, sensualist conception of ceiling painting.
