Suffering and Resistance: Depictions of Violence and Trauma in Jewish Museums

“To write a poem after Auschwitz is barbaric,” wrote Theodor W. Adorno in 1949. Many thinkers have agreed with his insight, and the question of the impossibility and limits of depicting the Shoah has been hotly debated ever since. More than 80 years after the end of World War II, various Jewish museums are grappling with this challenge. Is there—and should there be—a specific moral responsibility in this regard? How does one depict violence without glorifying it?

In this Lecture Professor Yaniv Feller (Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation) , a comparative perspective is developed that sheds new light on these questions.
