Cleaning and transforming data with OpenRefine
Beginner-friendly QPD Workshop „Cleaning and transforming data with OpenRefine“.

OpenRefine is a powerful free, open source tool for working with messy data: cleaning it; transforming it from one format into another; and extending it with web services and external data. It allows data wrangling using methods similar to spreadsheet applications, with rows of data organized in columns. You may correct inconsistencies, devise global edits, automate workflows and do many other functions on your data set. OpenRefine is widely used in the digital humanities and in GLAM (galeries, libraries, archives, museums) institutions but is also popular in the social sciences.
This workshop will introduce the tool’s basic functionalities using a sample dataset. In a hands-on seminar, participants will work along in real time and perform all the operations demonstrated themselves.
Pre-registration is required.
Prerequisites: This seminar is aimed at beginners. Participants do not need any prior expertise in using this tool. OpenRefine should be installed on a local computer.
Target audience for the workshop: Students, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, professionals, lifelong learners; max. 20 participants
Lecturer: Dr. Dietmar Kammerer has a background in film and media studies and works as research data officer at the Weizenbaum Institute. He is responsible for the development and operation of the Open Access Repository „Weizenbaum Library“ as well as for all aspects of research data management.
