Prominent sculptor of the new Federal Republic

The sculptor Fritz Koenig (1924–2017) was appointed to the Technical University of Munich in 1964. There, he headed the Department of Plastic Arts until 1995. Numerous works of art by Fritz Koenig adorn the main campus and the Weihenstephan campus of TUM.

As a sculptor, Fritz Koenig was one of Germany’s most important figures in the second half of the 20th century. Over the course of decades, his work played a decisive role in shaping the public spaces of the new Federal Republic. In parallel with his sculptural work, Koenig had demonstrated as early as 1961—with the design and construction of his estate on the Ganslberg near Landshut—just how integral design and architecture are to the context of his overall oeuvre.
